AI Disclaimer

Last updated: May 8, 2026

This disclaimer applies to Carl, the AI-powered study assistant integrated into Unlocked, and to every other AI-driven feature on the Service (collectively, the “AI Features”). The AI Features include, without limitation: Carl’s chat study buddy; the listing fair-housing audit; Carl’s daily brief on your dashboard; and any AI-generated summaries, recommendations, or rewrites produced anywhere in the Service. Please read this carefully and in full before using or relying on any AI Feature output for any purpose. By using the AI Features, you acknowledge and agree to the terms of this disclaimer.

What Carl Is

Carl is an AI study assistant powered by large language model technology (specifically, Anthropic’s Claude). He is designed to help you understand the material covered on the New York Real Estate Salesperson licensing examination — explaining concepts, quizzing you on topics, and guiding your study sessions.

Carl is a study aid only. He exists to help you prepare for an examination, not to provide authoritative guidance on real estate transactions, legal matters, regulatory proceedings, or any real-world situation.

What Carl Is Not

  • Carl is not a licensed real estate instructor or approved education provider under New York State law.
  • Carl is not a licensed attorney and cannot provide legal advice of any kind.
  • Carl is not a licensed real estate broker or salesperson.
  • Carl is not a financial advisor or mortgage professional and cannot provide financial or investment advice.
  • Carl does not have personal credentials, work history, licenses, or professional affiliations of any kind.
  • Carl is not infallible. He is a probabilistic language model and can produce responses that are incorrect, outdated, incomplete, or misleading — including with apparent confidence.

AI Hallucinations and Errors

AI language models, including Carl, are capable of generating responses that sound authoritative but are factually incorrect — a phenomenon commonly called “hallucination.” Carl may:

  • State incorrect legal rules, statutes, or numerical thresholds with apparent confidence
  • Misattribute information to specific laws or regulations
  • Provide outdated information that does not reflect current law or exam content
  • Present plausible-sounding but incorrect explanations of complex concepts

You should never rely solely on Carl’s response for any matter of consequence. Always verify important information with authoritative sources, including:

  • The New York Department of State, Division of Licensing Services
  • New York Real Property Law (RPL), particularly Article 12-A
  • New York Executive Law Article 15 (Human Rights Law)
  • Relevant federal statutes (Fair Housing Act, RESPA, TILA, FIRPTA, etc.)
  • Your licensed qualifying education school and instructors
  • A licensed New York attorney for any legal matter

Content Currency and Exam Changes

Real estate law, licensing regulations, and the New York State Real Estate Salesperson examination content are subject to change. Carl’s knowledge may not reflect the most recent statutory amendments, regulatory updates, or changes to the examination’s tested content. Unlocked makes no representation that Carl’s responses are current, complete, or consistent with the examination at the time you sit for it.

Always check the New York Department of State’s official guidance for the most current examination content and requirements before your exam date.

Educational Purposes Only

All of Carl’s responses are provided for educational purposes only. They are intended solely to help you study examination topics. Nothing Carl says constitutes legal advice, real estate advice, financial advice, regulatory guidance, or any other form of professional advice.

AI Features Beyond the Chat Study Buddy

Several Unlocked features beyond Carl’s chat surface use AI to generate, classify, or summarize information. Each carries the same general limitations described in this disclaimer.

  • Listing fair-housing audit. Analyzes listing copy you submit and flags phrases that may implicate federal Fair Housing Act, NY Executive Law §296, or NYC Human Rights Law issues. The audit is a quality check based on probabilistic AI analysis, not a legal opinion. It may miss violations and may flag language that is in fact compliant in context. Always have your broker or counsel review listings before publication. You remain solely responsible for your published listings and any consequences of their content.
  • Carl’s daily brief. A short AI-generated recommendation card displayed on your dashboard, derived from your stored progress and study activity. Recommendations are suggestions only and do not guarantee any outcome.
  • Carl’s tool use. Carl can run other Unlocked tools on your behalf during a conversation, including the closing-cost calculator, the commission calculator, the listing audit, and the NYC Property Check lookup. Tool outputs presented in chat carry the same disclaimers as their dedicated surfaces. The mathematical calculators are deterministic, not AI; the surrounding interpretation Carl provides is AI-generated and may contain errors.
  • AI-generated summaries and rewrites. Wherever the Service surfaces an AI-generated summary, study plan, brief, listing rewrite, or similar output, you should treat it as a starting point for your own review, not as a finished product. Independently verify before relying on it for any consequential decision.

Carl’s Long-Term Memory

Carl may store short durable notes about you across sessions (for example, a study goal you mentioned, a constraint on your time, or a topic you said is important to you). Carl uses these notes to maintain context without requiring you to repeat yourself.

Memory introduces specific risks you should understand:

  • Carl may misremember or misinterpret what you told him.
  • Carl may make assumptions in future conversations based on a stored note that is no longer accurate.
  • Notes are visible to Unlocked operators in the same way other account data is. They are not encrypted client-side.

You may instruct Carl to forget a specific note in conversation, or delete all notes by deleting your account. Do not rely on Carl’s memory for any matter where accuracy or persistence is important.

No Professional Relationship

Using Carl does not create an attorney-client relationship, a student-instructor relationship, a broker-client relationship, or any other professional, fiduciary, or advisory relationship between you and Unlocked or between you and any AI system.

Carl’s responses are not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional in any real estate transaction, legal proceeding, regulatory matter, or financial decision.

Not a Substitute for the Required Course

Unlocked, including Carl, is supplemental study material only. It does not fulfill the New York State-mandated 77-hour qualifying real estate salesperson education course, and is expressly not a replacement for it. That course must be completed at a duly licensed school before you may sit for the licensing examination.

Assumption of Risk

By using Carl, you expressly acknowledge and agree that: (a) you understand AI systems may produce inaccurate or misleading outputs; (b) you will independently verify any information Carl provides before relying on it; (c) you assume full responsibility for how you use Carl’s responses; and (d) your use of Carl is entirely at your own risk.

Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, UNLOCKED AND ITS OWNERS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS, DAMAGE, OR CLAIM OF ANY KIND ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF OR RELIANCE ON CARL’S RESPONSES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO FAILURE TO PASS ANY EXAMINATION, LOSS RESULTING FROM RELIANCE ON INCORRECT INFORMATION, OR ANY DECISIONS MADE BASED ON CARL’S OUTPUT. Use of Carl is subject to our full Terms of Service.
