Federal law prohibiting discrimination in the sale, rental, or financing of housing based on protected characteristics.


Definition

The Fair Housing Act of 1968 (Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act) prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability. New York's Human Rights Law adds additional protected classes including marital status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, and lawful source of income. Illegal practices include steering, blockbusting, and redlining.
